Arcopol Plates "Greek Plate Breaker"
This commercial was conceptualized by the AAA Advertising School in Johannesburg, South Africa. I had the opportunity to pitch for it and I got it. It was a low budget 'spec' spot so we shot it on Super 16mm and on a sound stage. It took weeks to find the right actor and if it wasn't for him, It wouldn't of been so funny. Again My DP was Anton who used bungee cable to suspend the camera from the ceiling so he could 'bounce around' in front of the actor. It was a hard shoot as I had lots of cooks giving their opinion which I'm not used to, being an indie filmmaker!
Charmaine edited the spot in record time and it was submitted to SA's "Loerie Awards" and New York City's "Clio Awards". It won silver. It was a fun experience so thats what I'll take from it!
Spoof Commercials on "Phat Joe Live"
I had the wonderful opportunity to work on "The Phat Joe Live" show, which was a variety 'SNL' type talk show. Every week I had to write and direct comedy skits for the show, and soon together with stand-up comic Kagiso Lediga(the shows 'sports presenter)we developed a few spoof commercials. I started writing a few scripts for Kagiso and the other 'cast members' and we'd shoot around three spots in a few hours. We had an 'ENG' TV crew who were used to shooting TV inserts so it was great seeing them join me in my 'spoof spot escapades'! On many occasions, Kagiso would improvise most of the dialogue which made my life easier.
Due to the shows budget constraints we had to improvise on our resources too! We used crew members from the show as well as any production company staff member we could find to act with Kagiso! I had one shot that I was dying to pull off yet our camera jib wasnt high enough, so we pulled up the van (combi) onto the basketball court, and rigged the crane on the cars roof to get the 'hoop shot'. Our Van (combi) came in good use for tracking shots too!
